Import rules in brief
Anyone who buys goods directly in Brazil becomes the importer and takes on duties that the wholesaler would otherwise carry. When you buy from an importer in the EU, they take on most of them.
-
Food and drinks
Mandatory information such as ingredients, allergens and best before date must appear on the product in German. Importing requires an EORI number, and import VAT applies, 7 percent for most foods.
-
Cosmetics and hair care
Every product needs a responsible person in the EU, a safety assessment and a notification in the EU portal CPNP. Formaldehyde is banned in cosmetics, and formaldehyde releasers require a warning.
-
Fashion, swimwear and shoes
Fibre composition must be labelled in German, and shoes need a material label. Brands such as Havaianas use selective distribution: buy them only from authorised dealers.
-
Customs and Mercosur
Since 1 May 2026 the interim agreement between the EU and Mercosur has been provisionally applied. Tariff preferences require an origin declaration from the Brazilian exporter. If you buy from an importer in the EU, no customs duty applies.
